Where to Stay in Seoul for First-Time Visitors: Myeongdong vs Hongdae vs Gangnam

If this is your first trip to Seoul, choosing the right neighborhood can make your whole trip easier.

I was born and raised in Korea, so I tend to look at Seoul travel a little differently from a visitor who only sees the city for a few days. My honest local answer is simple: most first-time visitors should stay in Myeongdong. It is not the trendiest neighborhood in Seoul, and yes, it can feel touristy. But for a first visit, convenience matters more than looking cool.

Quick Answer

  • Stay in Myeongdong if this is your first time in Seoul and you want the easiest base.
  • Stay in Hongdae if you want cafés, nightlife, street energy, and airport train convenience.
  • Stay in Gangnam if you prefer modern hotels, shopping, beauty clinics, and a polished city vibe.

If you are visiting Korea for the first time and only have 3 to 5 days, I would choose Myeongdong.

Myeongdong: Best for First-Time Visitors

Myeongdong is the easiest area for many first-time travelers because it puts you close to shopping, street food, subway stations, airport buses, currency exchange shops, cosmetics stores, and many hotels.

It is also convenient for classic Seoul sightseeing. From Myeongdong, it is fairly easy to reach Namsan Seoul Tower, Namdaemun Market, Gwanghwamun, Gyeongbokgung Palace, Insadong, and Bukchon Hanok Village.

As a local Korean, I would not call Myeongdong the most hidden or local neighborhood. But when you have just arrived in Korea, that is not always a bad thing. Easy food, easy transport, and easy navigation can make your first few days much smoother.

Best for

  • First-time visitors
  • Short trips
  • Shopping and cosmetics
  • Street food
  • Families
  • Travelers who want fewer surprises

Possible downside: Myeongdong can be crowded and touristy, especially in the evening.

Hongdae: Best for Cafés, Nightlife, and Younger Travelers

Hongdae has a completely different feeling. It is younger, louder, more creative, and better for nightlife. If you want cafés, bars, fashion shops, photo booths, street performances, and a more energetic atmosphere, Hongdae can be more fun than Myeongdong.

Hongdae is also convenient if you are arriving from Incheon Airport because the AREX airport train connects directly to Hongik University Station. That can be a big plus if you do not want to change trains with luggage.

Best for

  • Younger travelers
  • Friends or couples
  • Cafés and nightlife
  • Street fashion
  • Travelers using the airport train

Possible downside: Hongdae is not as central for palace and traditional sightseeing. If your plan is focused on Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, Insadong, Myeongdong, and Namsan, you may spend more time on the subway.

Gangnam: Best for Modern Seoul

Gangnam is clean, modern, and comfortable. It has business hotels, department stores, restaurants, beauty clinics, shopping streets, and places like COEX Mall and Starfield Library.

For first-time visitors, however, Gangnam is not always the most practical base. It is south of the Han River, so getting to many classic tourist spots can take longer.

Best for

  • Modern hotels
  • Shopping
  • Business trips
  • Beauty and skincare trips
  • Travelers who already know Seoul

Possible downside: Gangnam can feel less traditional and less convenient for first-time sightseeing north of the Han River.

My Local Recommendation

If this is your first Seoul trip, I would rank the areas like this:

  1. Myeongdong — easiest and most practical for first-timers
  2. Hongdae — best if you care more about cafés, nightlife, and youthful energy
  3. Gangnam — best for modern Seoul, shopping, clinics, and business hotels

My personal advice as a Korean local: do not choose your Seoul hotel only because the neighborhood looks cool on social media. Seoul is easy once you understand the subway, exits, airport buses, and walking distances, but those small details can feel confusing on your first day. For a first trip, choose the area that reduces stress. You can always visit the cool neighborhoods during the day or evening.

Where to Book

When comparing hotels, search near these stations:

  • Myeongdong: Myeongdong Station or Euljiro 1-ga Station
  • Hongdae: Hongik University Station
  • Gangnam: Gangnam Station or Samseong Station

FAQ

Yes, Myeongdong is touristy. But for a first trip, that can actually help. You will find easy transport, hotels, food, shopping, and more English-friendly services in one area.

Is Hongdae better than Myeongdong?

Hongdae is better for nightlife, cafés, and a younger atmosphere. Myeongdong is better for first-time convenience and classic sightseeing.

Is Gangnam a good place to stay in Seoul?

Gangnam is a good choice for modern hotels, shopping, beauty clinics, and business trips. For classic first-time sightseeing, I would usually choose Myeongdong or Hongdae first.

How many nights should I stay in Seoul?

For a first Korea trip, I recommend at least 4 nights in Seoul. That gives you enough time for palaces, markets, cafés, shopping, and one day trip if you want.
