Myeongdong Travel Guide: Food, Shopping, Hotels, and Local Tips
Myeongdong is one of Seoul’s easiest neighborhoods for first-time visitors. It is touristy, crowded, and commercial — but it is also convenient, central, and very practical when you are new to Korea.
Why Visit Myeongdong?
As a Korean local, I do not go to Myeongdong for a hidden local experience. I go there when I need convenience: shopping, cosmetics, food, subway access, money exchange, and easy meeting points.
Best Things to Do in Myeongdong
- Try street food in the evening
- Shop for Korean cosmetics and skincare
- Visit Myeongdong Cathedral
- Walk to Namdaemun Market
- Go up toward Namsan Seoul Tower if you have time
What to Eat
Myeongdong is not where I would search for the most traditional hidden restaurant, but it is very easy for travelers. Try kalguksu, Korean fried chicken, tteokbokki, hotteok, mandu, and convenience-store snacks.
Where to Stay
Myeongdong is a strong hotel base if this is your first Korea trip. Try to stay near Myeongdong Station, Euljiro 1-ga Station, or City Hall if you want easy subway and airport bus access.
Local Tips
- Street food is better in the evening than early afternoon.
- Check prices before ordering street food.
- Cosmetics shops may offer bundles, but do not feel pressured to buy.
- Use Myeongdong as a base, then explore more local areas during the day.
Is Myeongdong Worth It?
Yes, especially for first-time visitors. It may not be the coolest area in Seoul, but it solves many small travel problems quickly.
