How to Use Seoul Subway as a Tourist: A Simple Local Guide
Seoul subway is one of the best ways to travel around the city, but the first day can feel confusing because stations are large, exits matter, and transfers can be long.
Quick Answer
Get a transportation card, use Naver Map or KakaoMap, check the subway line color and exit number, and give yourself extra time for transfers.
Step 1: Get a Transportation Card
Most travelers use a rechargeable transportation card for subway and buses. You can usually buy and recharge cards at convenience stores or station machines.
Step 2: Use the Right Map App
Google Maps is not always the best in Korea. As a Korean local, I recommend using Naver Map or KakaoMap for more accurate subway exits, bus routes, and walking directions.
Step 3: Check the Exit Number
This is one of the biggest beginner mistakes. In Seoul, the correct station is not enough. You need the correct exit. Some stations are huge, and the wrong exit can add 10 to 20 minutes of walking.
Step 4: Be Ready for Transfers
Some transfers are easy. Others involve long underground walks, stairs, escalators, and crowded corridors. If you have heavy luggage, subway transfers can feel harder than expected.
Subway Etiquette
- Stand on the side before boarding and let people get off first.
- Do not sit in priority seats unless you need them.
- Keep phone calls quiet.
- On escalators, follow the local flow and do not block people.
Local Tip
If your route has too many transfers and you have luggage, consider an airport bus or taxi. Seoul subway is excellent, but it is not always the most comfortable choice after a long flight.
